“For those who had been paying attention, there had been early signs of weird stuff. Since the early 2010s there had been manipulation of elections by shady operators, hate trolls, or avatars operating for them, destroying people online. We knew all about the mass-addiction of populations to social networks and internet ‘echo chambers’ where like-minded people reinforced and made acceptable the totally unacceptable. Weird stuff. Some world leaders thought that they might be able to take advantage and ride the pony, but no one in a position of power, authority or decision-making gathered up all the threads, saw how they might, with a bit of bad luck or evil planning, be woven together into something new and frightening. No one leaped to the obvious conclusion.”
